Could not find a source for this news on the internet yet, so we guess we will break the news to you that you are not alone: Gmail is currently down due to unknown issues.
We have talked to numerous sources around America and 50% of them have confirmed they are receiving the same error message:
“We’re sorry, but your Gmail account is temporarily unavailable. We apologize for the inconvenience and suggest trying again in a few minutes.”
While the other 50% are reporting no issues.
The official Google note on the issue:

UPDATE: Google is reporting the issue only affects less than 5% of users worldwide, and will be issuing a statement at 2:18 PM.
UPDATE: As of 1:36 PM EST, Gmail is back up and running.
